Some game updates add a few extras. Others change the reasons players might return years later. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla now belongs in the second category, thanks to a free PS5 update that combines New Game Plus with a significant technical improvement for PS5 Pro owners.
Available from November 5, 2026, Ubisoft’s latest release brings changes to progression, additional rewards and upgraded image reconstruction. However, its most interesting achievement may be giving an established adventure a fresh purpose without rebuilding the game itself.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla now offers more reasons to begin another journey
The free release, officially named The Most Requested Update, arrives on PS5 and PS5 Pro with several player-requested improvements. New Game Plus is the headline addition, offering a new opportunity to experience the Viking adventure after an earlier playthrough.
Alongside that feature, Ubisoft has introduced an Enhanced Progression Mode option and a new Power calculation. These additions make character development another important part of the update, although their precise gameplay effects should not be assumed beyond what has been officially confirmed.
The package also includes two new achievements or trophies, the Master Assassin Naoe outfit and an Animus Hub synchronization update. Together, these changes go beyond a straightforward graphics patch. They address different aspects of the experience, from progression to customization and connected franchise features.
That approach fits into a wider conversation about the future of the Assassin’s Creed series and Ubisoft’s plans for new games. Supporting an established adventure offers a different way to keep existing entries relevant while the franchise continues evolving.
PS5 Pro owners gain sharper 4K visuals without sacrificing the 60FPS target
The most substantial technical change is exclusive to PS5 Pro. Ubisoft has integrated an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s image reconstruction technology, to improve the game’s visual presentation.
According to Priscilla Nguyen, Engineering Studio Manager at Ubisoft, this upgraded solution is more efficient than the original PSSR implementation. It is also slightly more efficient than the game’s previous Temporal Upscaler. More importantly, Nguyen describes a considerable improvement in image crispness and visual stability.
The result is particularly relevant for anyone who prefers image quality but does not want to give up smooth performance. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla can now deliver its Quality mode at 60FPS on PS5 Pro, alongside sharper 4K image quality through upgraded PSSR.
These details were explained in the official PlayStation Blog announcement featuring Ubisoft’s engineering insights. Crucially, the visual improvements should not be confused with new environments, redesigned assets or additional story content.
Ubisoft improved Assassin’s Creed Valhalla without rebuilding its visual assets
Perhaps the most revealing part of this update concerns how Ubisoft achieved these improvements. Rather than redesigning environments or replacing existing visual assets, its engineers integrated upgraded PSSR directly into the engine and rendering pipeline.
That distinction matters. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was developed years before PS5 Pro existed, so the team had to balance image quality, performance and technical integration within an established game. Introducing newer rendering technology into older software is not necessarily as straightforward as applying the same solution to a recent release.
Fortunately, Ubisoft already had relevant experience. The upgraded PSSR technology had previously been integrated into Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Valhalla presented a different challenge because its original technical foundations predated the hardware now benefiting from these optimizations.
For players, the distinction is simple: improved image reconstruction can make an existing world look cleaner without changing the world itself. Norway’s snowy landscapes and England’s varied countryside remain familiar, but PS5 Pro owners should benefit from a sharper and more stable presentation.
Free upgrades are becoming another reason to revisit familiar adventures
There is a broader advantage to this approach. A game does not necessarily need a complete remake to become attractive again. Sometimes, improvements to performance and image quality are enough to make returning worthwhile, especially when they arrive alongside meaningful gameplay options.
Another recent example is the free Metro Redux next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Although its technical changes differ from Ubisoft’s work, both releases demonstrate how older adventures can benefit from modern hardware without abandoning their original identities.
Nevertheless, the two versions of Valhalla’s update should be considered separately. Regular PS5 players receive the newly announced gameplay and quality-of-life features. Meanwhile, PS5 Pro owners also gain the exclusive upgraded PSSR optimizations, including the improved 4K presentation and 60FPS Quality mode.
That makes this release more interesting than a routine maintenance patch. New Game Plus addresses replayability, while the technical upgrade focuses on presentation. Neither improvement replaces the other, and their combination gives different players different reasons to return.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla now has an opportunity to attract players who thought their Viking journey was finished. The free November 5 update does not promise an entirely new adventure, but it makes revisiting the existing one more appealing. Would New Game Plus bring you back, or is sharper 4K gameplay at 60FPS the bigger attraction?
