October’s PlayStation charts tell two stories. Familiar blockbusters still dominate, yet some of the most interesting results belong to games outside the usual headline franchises. The PlayStation Store top downloads for October 2026 show a surprisingly consistent PS5 top four across North America and Europe, alongside very different preferences further down the rankings.
From BeamNG.drive’s remarkable placement to Phantom Blade Zero’s strong showing, this month’s figures offer more than another Call of Duty victory. They also highlight the continued appeal of PS4 classics and a different competitive picture among free-to-play titles.
PlayStation Store top downloads show surprising agreement on PS5
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 finished first on PS5 in both the US/Canada and European charts. However, the positions immediately below it reveal something more interesting about October’s digital purchases.
BeamNG.drive took second place in North America and third in Europe. Meanwhile, EA Sports FC 27 occupied those same positions in reverse order. Both regions therefore shared the same three leading games, despite their different rankings.
Perhaps even more noteworthy, Phantom Blade Zero secured fourth place in both markets. That consistency stands out because the action RPG appeared alongside established franchises and recognizable sporting releases. It also gives additional context to our earlier coverage of Phantom Blade Zero’s impressive launch sales.
The official October 2026 PlayStation Store download rankings confirm these positions. However, the charts do not disclose individual download totals, so they cannot establish how close the competing games were.
North American and European players diverged beyond the leading games
Once we move beyond the shared top four, regional differences become considerably clearer. Madden NFL 27 and NBA 2K27 occupied fifth and sixth place respectively in the US/Canada PS5 ranking. College Football 27 also appeared in eleventh position.
Europe’s top ten followed another pattern. Minecraft ranked fifth, followed by Peak in sixth and Enshrouded in seventh. Star Wars: Galactic Racer reached eighth place, while Mafia III: Definitive Edition and Planet Zoo 2 completed the European top ten.
Interestingly, Peak also performed well in North America, taking seventh place. Star Wars: Galactic Racer appeared eighth in both regions, providing another example of shared interest beneath the biggest releases.
Meanwhile, the North American top 20 featured Halloween in twelfth, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival in thirteenth and Marvel’s Wolverine in fourteenth. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, Final Fantasy Resonance and Minecraft Dungeons II also secured places in that market.
Europe’s wider top 20 included familiar names such as Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil 4 and ARC Raiders. These appearances underline how older releases and recent titles can coexist in the same monthly ranking.
The important distinction is regional preference, not total market size. A higher chart position in one territory does not automatically mean more worldwide downloads. Nevertheless, the contrast provides a useful snapshot of what attracted digital buyers during October.
PS4 classics continue attracting downloads while virtual reality follows its own path
While PS5 dominated the main conversation, the PS4 results offered another compelling perspective. Red Dead Redemption 2 led both regional PS4 charts, showing that an established adventure can still outperform numerous alternatives in monthly download rankings.
Batman: Arkham Knight also remained prominent, taking second place in North America and third in Europe. Elsewhere, Gang Beasts, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Minecraft completed the North American top five.
European PS4 players placed EA Sports FC 27 second, A Way Out fourth and Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy fifth. These differences suggest that the older console continues serving audiences with varied interests, rather than simply mirroring PS5 purchasing patterns.
Another notable appearance came from Bloodborne, which reached eleventh place in Europe’s PS4 chart. That position complements our separate examination of why Bloodborne continues selling in 2026. Its presence is particularly interesting for a game that has remained closely associated with the PS4 generation.
PlayStation VR2, meanwhile, produced one clear shared winner. Hard Bullet ranked first in both regions. However, the remaining podium positions differed: Horizon Call of the Mountain and Into the Radius 2 followed in North America, whereas I Am Cat and Beat Saber finished second and third in Europe.
Consequently, October’s results illustrate that virtual reality preferences cannot simply be inferred from conventional PS5 charts. The leading VR purchases formed their own distinct picture.
Free-to-play PlayStation Store top downloads reveal a different contest
The free-to-play category delivered another regional reversal. Once Human claimed first place in the US/Canada chart, ahead of Call of Duty Warzone and Fortnite. In Europe, Fortnite led, Once Human followed in second and Call of Duty Warzone finished third.
All three games therefore appeared in both regional top threes, but their ordering changed. This makes the category particularly interesting when compared with paid PS5 purchases, where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 occupied first place on both sides of the Atlantic.
Still, these rankings measure downloads rather than active players, engagement or revenue. A first-place finish does not establish which game has the largest community or generates the most spending.
The same caution applies across every category. Sony’s figures cover PlayStation Store downloads, with game upgrades excluded and hardware-bundled titles excluded from the PS VR2 purchase rankings. Product names can also differ between regions. As a result, the charts are best understood as a monthly snapshot of digital demand, not a complete account of commercial performance.
Ultimately, the PlayStation Store top downloads for October 2026 reveal a market where blockbuster franchises share attention with distinctive releases and enduring classics. Call of Duty may have secured the most visible victory, but BeamNG.drive, Phantom Blade Zero and the continuing presence of older PS4 games make the wider picture far more interesting. Which of these results surprised you most?
