A town already haunted by impossible creatures is about to become even less predictable. The WORLD OF HORROR update, titled AS BELOW SO ABOVE, is now available for free on PC, expanding the cosmic horror RPG in ways that go beyond adding more monsters to fight.

For returning players, the real attraction is how these additions could change familiar runs. New divine threats, playable survivors and connected stories give Shiokawa fresh secrets to uncover. Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch owners will have to wait until 2027.

Why the WORLD OF HORROR update changes replayability

Developer panstasz has expanded WORLD OF HORROR by approximately 20 percent, making AS BELOW SO ABOVE the largest update in the game’s history. New events, enemies, mysteries, items, spells, curses and injuries join a sizeable collection of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

However, quantity alone does not explain why this matters. WORLD OF HORROR is built around unpredictable encounters, harsh decisions and turn-based combat. Players navigate mysteries through a deck of event cards, meaning that different combinations can produce very different journeys through the same haunted town.

Adding more possibilities to that structure is particularly valuable. A new curse might complicate an otherwise promising investigation, while an unfamiliar enemy could force players to reconsider their usual approach. The update therefore has the potential to make established strategies less reliable without replacing the systems that define the game.

This approach also fits the identity WORLD OF HORROR has maintained since its full launch on October 19, 2023. Its stark 1-bit visuals and disturbing imagery draw inspiration from Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft. Yet its lasting appeal comes from making players feel that every decision could be their last.

Two Old Gods bring different kinds of terror to Shiokawa

Among the most significant additions are two new Old God manifestations. Rather than simply introducing powerful opponents, both expand the unsettling mythology surrounding Shiokawa.

IKT-YOSIS, THE FIRST NIGHTMARE lies dormant inside an enormous chamber beneath the mountains. Cultists attempting to awaken this entity gradually transform the world above. Strange weather accompanies their rituals, suggesting that the danger extends far beyond the underground chamber itself.

THE WAR FOR SHIOKAWA presents a different nightmare. Four cults attempt to summon their eldritch masters simultaneously, overwhelming the town with supernatural evil. Instead of focusing on one awakening, this manifestation imagines several terrifying forces competing for control.

That contrast is important for a game where cosmic threats shape the atmosphere of each playthrough. One manifestation emphasizes an approaching catastrophe, while the other turns Shiokawa into the center of a supernatural conflict.

Consequently, these additions promise more than extra lore. They offer different narrative foundations for the unpredictable investigations that players already know.

Scenario Mode gives the game’s mysteries a shared history

Perhaps the most interesting addition is Scenario Mode, a new way to explore stories set before the main adventure. These self-contained episodes expand the game’s background and establish connections between different mysteries.

One example is FOREST OF FEAR / TAPES OF TRAGEDY. This scenario follows MAKOTO, an ambitious member of the school’s audiovisual club, who decides to film a documentary investigating the forest’s oldest legend.

It is a fitting premise for WORLD OF HORROR. A seemingly ordinary student project becomes an opportunity to explore the kind of unsettling folklore that defines Shiokawa. Moreover, the documentary format provides a different perspective from the usual struggle to survive an unfolding apocalypse.

Scenario Mode could prove especially appealing to players who enjoy piecing together clues about the town. Instead of encountering every mystery as an isolated nightmare, they can explore events that help explain its wider history.

The expansion also introduces three playable characters. Two of them are KIRIKO, a mysterious tarot reader whose cards influence Shiokawa’s destiny, and SATOSHI, a young hiker with extensive knowledge of the surrounding mountains.

Their backgrounds suggest interesting narrative possibilities. Kiriko fits the game’s fascination with fate and supernatural forces, whereas Satoshi offers a more grounded connection to the wilderness surrounding town. Their exact gameplay advantages, however, should not be assumed from those descriptions alone.

PC players get the expansion first, with more modding freedom

AS BELOW SO ABOVE is available now as a free update on PC. Players can find WORLD OF HORROR through its existing PC storefronts, including Steam, GOG and itch.io.

The PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions are scheduled for 2027, although Ysbryd Games has not announced a specific release date. Anyone playing on Nintendo’s console can follow other releases through Battle4Play’s Nintendo Switch coverage, while PC players can explore the latest PC gaming updates.

Another important improvement concerns Steam Workshop. Expanded modding tools give creators additional options for building enemies, events and mysteries, alongside greater control over their customization.

For a game driven by randomized encounters, community creations can be particularly meaningful. More custom mysteries and unusual encounters may help extend its lifespan beyond the content included in official releases. Naturally, the results will depend on what modders actually produce.

Players interested in the game’s original mechanics and distinctive presentation can also visit the official WORLD OF HORROR Steam page.

Ultimately, the WORLD OF HORROR update feels less like a conventional content drop and more like an effort to make Shiokawa worth investigating all over again. Its new scenarios offer additional context, while fresh supernatural threats increase the variety of possible nightmares. For returning players, that combination may be more compelling than the 20 percent figure itself.
