Finding something different to play on PS5 or PS4 doesn’t always mean waiting for the next blockbuster. Some of the most interesting Spanish indie games offer smaller, more focused experiences built around unusual mechanics, distinctive artwork and stories that stay with you.
To celebrate PlayStation Store’s 20th anniversary, PlayStation Spain highlighted seven games developed by Spanish studios on November 3, 2026. Several are also included in the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog.
Rather than treating them as a conventional ranking, we’ve grouped these seven recommendations by what they actually offer players. Whether you prefer peaceful exploration, strategic combat or emotionally charged storytelling, there’s a very different adventure waiting in each category.
These Spanish indie games are perfect when you want a story that stays with you
1. Endling: Extinction is Forever — A survival adventure where every decision feels personal
Developed by Barcelona-based Herobeat Studios, Endling: Extinction is Forever arrived on PS4 and PS5 in 2022. It places players in the role of the last mother fox on Earth, struggling to keep her three cubs alive in an environment damaged by human activity.
Its environmental message works because the danger isn’t abstract. You’re responsible for vulnerable animals, and that responsibility gives ordinary survival decisions emotional weight. Instead of asking players to save an entire world, Endling makes protecting one small family feel important.
The adventure also earned a BAFTA, while Herobeat Studios is now developing Wilderings: The Lost Spring, a project featuring visuals inspired by Studio Ghibli. For anyone who enjoys games with an ecological theme, Endling is a particularly compelling choice.
2. Inner Ashes — A journey through memory and family relationships
Madrid’s Calathea Game Studio approaches emotional storytelling from another direction with Inner Ashes, released for PS4 and PS5 in 2023.
Players follow Henry, a forest ranger living with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Through a first-person narrative adventure, he explores his own mind to understand why his relationship with his daughter Enid deteriorated.
Rather than relying on conventional action, Inner Ashes uses symbolic environments and poetic puzzles to communicate Henry’s experiences. Its strongest appeal lies in how exploration and storytelling support each other.
If you’re looking for a reflective style of adventure rather than constant combat, this is the kind of game worth investigating. However, its subject matter makes it a very different emotional experience from a typical relaxing puzzle game.
Two charming Spanish indie games prove exploration does not need constant combat
3. Mika and the Witch’s Mountain — Delivering packages can be its own adventure
Not every open environment needs enemies around every corner. Mika and the Witch’s Mountain builds its appeal around flying, deliveries and discovering an island at your own pace.
Created by Valencia-based Chibig alongside Nukefist, the game arrived on PS4 and PS5 in 2025. Its protagonist is a young witch apprentice who must deliver packages using her broom while working toward returning to the summit of Mount Gaun.
The premise draws inspiration from animated classics such as Kiki’s Delivery Service. Consequently, the pleasure comes from movement, atmosphere and gradually becoming familiar with the island rather than mastering a combat system.
The project also has an unusual crowdfunding distinction: it became the most crowdfunded Spanish video game in Kickstarter history, raising more than one million dollars.
For players who want a cozy, combat-free experience, Mika offers one of the clearest alternatives in this selection.
4. Moonlighter — A shopkeeper who refuses to abandon his heroic ambitions
At first glance, Moonlighter seems like a traditional dungeon-crawling adventure. However, its most memorable idea happens outside the dungeon.
Developed by Valencia’s Digital Sun Games and published by 11 bit studios, this 2018 PS4 release follows Will, a shopkeeper living in the village of Rynoka who dreams of becoming a hero.
His daily routine creates an engaging contrast. Exploring dangerous dungeons provides items and resources, while running his shop gives those expeditions a practical purpose.
That combination creates a satisfying rhythm between risk and routine. Unlike Mika, Moonlighter does feature combat, yet both games make everyday activities central to their identity.
There’s also a reason to revisit the series: Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is available on PlayStation Store and is included in the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog.
Competitive Spanish indie games offer creature tactics and unpredictable shooting duels
5. Temtem — Creature collecting with a competitive twist
Anyone familiar with creature-collection adventures will immediately recognize part of Temtem‘s appeal. Nevertheless, Madrid-based Crema introduces its own priorities through multiplayer systems and tactical battles.
Released on PS5 in 2020, Temtem takes place across the Airborne Archipelago, where players collect creatures and participate in turn-based encounters.
Its defining competitive feature is luck-free two-versus-two combat. Rather than depending on random outcomes, battles emphasize planning, team composition and understanding how different creatures work together.
Competitive breeding adds another layer for players who enjoy improving their teams over time. Meanwhile, the massively multiplayer structure gives the world a more social identity than a purely solo creature-collecting adventure.
Following the spin-off Temtem: Swarm, Crema is working on another project called Temtem: Pioneers.
6. Friends vs Friends — A shooter where your cards can rewrite the fight
Madrid studio Brainwash Gang, also known for Laika: Aged Through Blood, takes an entirely different approach to competition with Friends vs Friends.
Released on PS5 in 2025, this first-person shooter combines deckbuilding with one-versus-one and two-versus-two matches.
The interesting part isn’t simply choosing a weapon. Cards can provide equipment, introduce surreal effects or change the rules while a match is underway.
As a result, each confrontation asks players to adapt to more than their opponent’s aim. Understanding your deck and reacting to unexpected situations become part of the challenge.
For players who find conventional competitive shooters too predictable, Friends vs Friends offers a playful alternative without abandoning direct, fast-paced competition.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound delivers the toughest action-focused recommendation
7. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound — Classic ninja action through a Spanish studio’s perspective
The final recommendation is also the most direct choice for players who want demanding action.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound arrived on PS4 and PS5 in 2025, developed by Seville-based The Game Kitchen, the studio behind Blasphemous.
Published by Dotemu in collaboration with Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo, this side-scrolling 2D action game combines detailed pixel art with challenging combat.
Its protagonist, Kenji Mozu, is a young ninja from Hayabusa village. The story follows his adventure while Ryu travels to America, giving the game a different perspective within the Ninja Gaiden universe.
The connection to The Game Kitchen is especially interesting. After establishing its identity through Blasphemous, the Spanish developer brings its experience with striking 2D presentation and demanding gameplay to an established action franchise.
Furthermore, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is included in PS Plus Extra and Premium, making it particularly relevant for subscribers looking for a skill-based challenge.
Choosing your next PlayStation adventure depends on the experience you want
These seven Spanish indie games demonstrate how varied the country’s development scene has become. More importantly, they show why searching by genre alone doesn’t always lead to the right recommendation.
If you’re in the mood for emotional storytelling, start with Endling or Inner Ashes. For a gentler experience, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain is the natural choice, while Moonlighter offers a more combat-oriented mixture of exploration and management.
Competitive players should consider Temtem for deliberate tactical encounters or Friends vs Friends for unpredictable multiplayer duels. Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is the obvious pick when precision and demanding combat matter most.
Availability is another consideration. With several titles represented in the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog, subscribers may want to check their current library before buying anything separately.
Beyond these recommendations, PlayStation players can also follow PlayStation Store’s Black Friday deals and dates when planning their next purchase.
There’s a wider platform context, too. With PS5 reaching 97.9 million units, smaller developers have an opportunity to reach a substantial console audience alongside major releases.
Ultimately, the appeal of these Spanish indie games isn’t that they all deliver the same kind of experience. It’s precisely the opposite: seven studios and creative teams demonstrate seven different ways to make a game memorable.
Which would you play first: an emotional survival story, a cozy flying adventure, a tactical multiplayer challenge or an old-school ninja action game?
