Two giant monsters clash in a coastal city at night in a scene inspired by Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered

Picking the biggest monster is not always the smartest way to win. In Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, a fast kaiju can overwhelm a stronger rival, while a patient fighter can punish reckless attacks without chasing anyone around the battlefield.

Released for PS5 on November 3, 2026, Atari and Pipeworks Studios’ giant-monster fighting game features 12 playable kaiju with different strengths, weaknesses and special abilities. The important question is not simply who hits hardest, but which monster fits the way you want to fight.

Using the characteristics detailed in the official PlayStation Blog fighter guide, we have grouped the roster by combat style to make that decision easier.

Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered rewards balanced fighters when you are learning

Heisei Godzilla is our recommended starting character. His generous health and reliable overall statistics make mistakes easier to survive. Fast claw attacks also provide an approachable introduction to close-range fighting, while his tail gives him an effective way to strike when recovering from a knockdown.

However, there is a catch. His powerful high-energy pulse takes time to prepare, creating an opportunity for opponents to interrupt him. His projectiles are also slow. Therefore, Heisei Godzilla works best when you approach enemies rather than attempting to win a shooting contest.

Godzilla 2000 offers a slightly different balance. He sacrifices some strength for additional speed and may feel even easier to handle. His purple dorsal plates distinguish him visually, but his real appeal is straightforward movement combined with dependable attacks.

Kiryu is another interesting option for players who want flexibility without abandoning ranged weapons. Built around the original Godzilla’s skeleton, this mechanical fighter has more balanced statistics than Mechagodzilla. Its Absolute Zero Cannon also powers a particularly forceful rage attack. Choose Kiryu if you like the basic Godzilla approach but want a stronger emphasis on weaponry.

Rodan, Gigan and Megalon suit players who prefer speed and constant pressure

Rodan is the obvious choice for maximum mobility. No other monster matches his speed or aerial movement. Quick melee attacks and a powerful breath weapon allow him to threaten opponents before repositioning. Unfortunately, he also has the weakest defense in the entire roster. A careless exchange can quickly erase his mobility advantage.

Gigan is better suited to players who enjoy aggressive close-range pressure. His teleportation improves both approach options and evasive movement, while his hook claws deliver substantial edged damage. Unlike a purely physical attacker, he can also threaten from a distance. Nevertheless, his awkward Laser Eye and vulnerability to energy attacks mean reckless aggression carries risks.

Megalon takes a more deceptive approach. Burrowing lets him escape incoming attacks and emerge near opponents for a grab. His electrical abilities add offensive variety, although tunnelling consumes energy. Since his defense is below average, repeated direct confrontations are rarely the smartest choice.

The distinction is simple: Rodan wins through movement, Gigan through pressure and Megalon through unpredictability. All three reward activity, but each demands a different kind of caution.

King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla control distance in Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered

Some players would rather force opponents to approach than rush forward themselves. King Ghidorah is built for that preference. His enormous body provides resilience, while multiple projectiles help him control space. When airborne, he can fire lightning without charging it first. However, flight drains energy, and his limited limbs make close combat particularly uncomfortable.

Mechagodzilla takes ranged fighting in a more mechanical direction. Created by the alien Vortaak, this space-titanium machine carries lasers, missiles and a plasma cannon. Its flying head-butt adds another offensive possibility, while its defensive statistics are better than Kiryu’s.

The drawback is resource dependence. Flying and many ranged attacks consume energy. Once those options become unavailable, Mechagodzilla must rely on comparatively weak grabs and sluggish melee attacks.

Mecha-King Ghidorah offers a third approach. Reconstructed by 23rd-century scientists, this version sacrifices some of the original Ghidorah’s raw strength for improved equipment, including a shield and draining projectiles. Its grappling versatility is another advantage. Nevertheless, slow movement and energy-hungry abilities remain serious limitations.

For pure battlefield control, choose King Ghidorah. For a heavily armed defensive specialist, try Mechagodzilla. Meanwhile, Mecha-King Ghidorah makes more sense if you want ranged attacks alongside meaningful grappling options.

Orga and Anguirus make grappling and counterattacks surprisingly dangerous

Orga is the roster’s standout grappler. This alien creature, mutated with Godzilla DNA, uses enormous hands to threaten opponents from an impressive distance. Its reach makes close and intermediate-range encounters particularly dangerous for enemies who allow themselves to be grabbed.

Yet Orga has obvious weaknesses. Faster monsters can evade its attempts, while opponents resistant to blunt damage reduce its effectiveness. Its paralysing goo offers another tool, but the substantial energy requirement makes careless use expensive.

Anguirus provides a different answer to aggressive enemies. Instead of relying on overwhelming damage, he combines speed, strong defense and respectable grappling with unusual counterattacking potential.

His defensive turning animation makes blocking relatively slow. However, the spines covering his back damage attackers who strike him during that defense. Since Anguirus lacks long-range attacks and has limited offensive power, patience is essential.

Choose Orga if you enjoy forcing opponents into dangerous grabs. Choose Anguirus if you prefer punishing mistakes and turning enemy aggression against them.

Destoroyah is the heavyweight pick for players who can manage energy carefully

Destoroyah combines devastating physical strength with several extremely damaging energy abilities, many of which cannot be blocked. That combination makes him particularly threatening at mid-range, where he can pressure opponents without depending entirely on close combat.

However, this power comes with two substantial disadvantages. Destoroyah moves painfully slowly, and his strongest abilities consume large amounts of energy. Without sufficient resources, he can struggle to maintain offensive pressure or respond to more mobile enemies.

Consequently, Destoroyah rewards deliberate decisions rather than constant attacking. Players willing to accept limited mobility in exchange for destructive potential will find him appealing.

Ultimately, the best kaiju depends on which weakness you are comfortable managing. Heisei Godzilla offers the safest starting point, Rodan delivers exceptional speed, Orga dominates grappling, and King Ghidorah excels at keeping enemies away. Destoroyah, meanwhile, is the choice for anyone who values raw damage over agility.

Godzilla’s return also arrives during a November filled with older gaming influences. The upcoming retro-styled sci-fi horror game DERELIKT brings another nostalgic experience to PS5, while Barbie Rewind brings classic games back in a very different kind of collection.

For anyone exploring Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered on PS5, the best first step is to choose a fighting style rather than a favourite monster. Once you understand that character’s limitations, the rest of the roster becomes much easier to appreciate.
