A community-made project is transforming Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow into fully explorable 3D worlds while preserving the classic pixel-art style that defined the first generation.
Rather than remaking the games with modern graphics, the project recreates the original maps as three-dimensional environments, allowing players to experience familiar towns and routes from entirely new perspectives.
Gen1Recomp Reimagines the Original Pokemon Adventure
The project, known as Gen1Recomp, works alongside a companion modification called Dramatic Shape Voxel Mod. Together, they convert the original Game Boy games into a 3D experience without replacing the iconic sprites or artwork.
Instead of changing the game’s visual identity, the software builds three-dimensional environments using the existing assets. Players can freely adjust the camera, explore locations from different angles, and even alter the lighting by changing the time of day.
Videos shared by the community showcase familiar places such as Pallet Town, Viridian Forest, and other classic Kanto locations viewed in ways that were never possible on Nintendo’s handheld hardware.

Virtual Reality Support Makes the Experience Even More Immersive
One of the project’s biggest additions is optional VR compatibility. Players using a compatible virtual reality headset can explore Kanto from a first-person perspective, naturally looking around by moving their heads while using motion controllers to interact with the game.
The mod is designed to work with Windows devices that support the OpenXR standard, although traditional gameplay is still available. Those who prefer a more familiar viewpoint can switch to a third-person camera at any time.

The Project Still Requires an Original Pokemon ROM
Unlike complete fan games that distribute copyrighted assets, Gen1Recomp does not include Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow. Instead, users must provide their own legally obtained ROM, which the software reads in order to generate the 3D version of the game.
This approach may help distinguish the project from other fan creations that have faced legal action in the past, since no official game files are distributed with the application itself. Even so, Nintendo has a long history of protecting its intellectual property, making the long-term future of projects like this difficult to predict.
Players who own original Game Boy cartridges can create compatible backups using hardware designed to read authentic cartridges on a PC, allowing them to preserve both their games and save files while using the project.
