Phasmophobia Ghost Hunting Update Could Transform Investigations

Resonance brings smarter ghost-tracking tools, Unity 6 improvements and new ways to investigate, while Kinetic Games prepares for its 1.0 milestone.

Finding a ghost is only half the challenge in Phasmophobia. Understanding its behavior, tracking suspicious noises and surviving long enough to identify it are just as important. The upcoming Phasmophobia ghost hunting update could make those decisions more interesting, with new investigation tools arriving alongside a major technical overhaul.

Called Resonance, the update is scheduled for late November 2026, although Kinetic Games has not announced an exact release date. Rather than treating new features and performance improvements as separate projects, the studio is bringing them together in one substantial patch. The result could change both how investigations feel and how reliably they run.

Why Phasmophobia’s next update matters beyond new content

Phasmophobia has spent more than six years in PC Early Access, having launched on Steam in September 2020. Its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in October 2024 expanded the audience for its four-player paranormal investigations. However, supporting different platforms and optional VR play also makes technical consistency increasingly important.

Resonance addresses that challenge by moving the game to Unity 6. Kinetic Games is targeting lower CPU, GPU, RAM and VRAM demands, alongside fixes for memory leaks and frequently reported crashes. Those are development goals rather than independently measured performance gains, so the real results will become clear after release.

Lighting is receiving a substantial overhaul too. Players will also find graphics presets, overall quality options and an extreme shadow setting. VR users gain Eye Adaptation, while eight color-vision accessibility modes cover Protanopia, Protanomaly, Deuteranopia, Deuteranomaly, Tritanopia, Tritanomaly, Achromatopsia and Achromatomaly.

Phasmophobia ghost hunting update makes sound more useful

One of the most interesting changes concerns an existing device rather than a brand-new gadget. The Sound Sensor is getting a redesigned truck display that identifies where detected noises originate. Instead of relying on less informative readings, investigators will see icons marking sound locations.

The display will distinguish brief disturbances from continuous activity. A single noise produces a temporary marker, whereas repeating sounds remain visible. Detection is restricted to the same floor, which should help teams interpret information without confusing activity on different levels.

More importantly, movement speed may become a useful clue. During a hunt, monitoring sounds could help experienced players narrow down the ghost type. That creates a practical reason to keep someone watching the equipment while teammates investigate, although its effectiveness will depend on how consistently the new system behaves.

Dowsing Rods and ghost commands could reshape investigations

Bone hunting is also becoming less dependent on checking every corner of a building. New Dowsing Rods will help locate the hidden bone on each map, with three equipment tiers offering different levels of precision. Tier I indicates a broad direction, while Tier III can narrow the search considerably and even identify the correct floor.

This could be particularly valuable in larger locations, where searching for optional objectives can consume considerable investigation time. Nevertheless, better equipment does not remove the danger of exploring a haunted building. Teams will still need to decide whether an additional objective is worth the risk.

Meanwhile, expanded voice recognition will allow players to request more specific paranormal activity. Investigators can ask ghosts to interact with doors or switches, throw nearby objects or reveal signs of their presence. The new commands also work through Text mode, with VR players accessing them on the Sanity watch. A dedicated Journal page will list every supported phrase.

These additions could make communication feel more purposeful. Rather than repeatedly hoping for an observable reaction, players will have clearer ways to request one. However, the announcement does not establish that ghosts will obey every command, so successful investigations will still require patience and interpretation.

More control over maps and a wider Xbox ecosystem

Resonance also changes how groups choose their next location. Instead of accepting the existing random-map system, players can build a custom random selection containing any number of maps. Quick filters for small, medium and large locations simplify the process, while a dice icon replaces the previous random-map polaroid.

That flexibility could be especially useful for groups that want unpredictable sessions without repeatedly landing on locations they dislike. For example, friends practicing on smaller maps could exclude sprawling environments while preserving the surprise of a random selection.

Another significant addition is Xbox Play Anywhere. With the update, Xbox owners will be able to access Phasmophobia on supported Windows PCs, laptops, ROG Ally devices and Xbox Series X|S through the program. This is a useful distinction from ordinary cross-platform multiplayer: it concerns where an eligible Xbox purchase can be played.

For players exploring multiplayer horror elsewhere, Battle4Play recently covered Xbox’s Halloween horror game trials, including Dead by Daylight. Meanwhile, our look at PS5’s community activity features explores another way console platforms are helping players discover multiplayer experiences.

The road to Phasmophobia 1.0 still has unfinished business

Not everything originally associated with Resonance will arrive in November. The Player Character Visual Update has been separated from the patch to allow additional development time. It promises more than 30 cosmetics, color and texture variants, improved character models and a redesigned Customisation Shop. Its new release date remains unconfirmed.

Elsewhere, the next environmental makeover will focus on 42 Edgefield Road, with the reworked map still planned for later in 2026. Resonance also introduces a revised moderation system: less severe Code of Conduct violations can result in warnings before bans, and players will receive notifications when their reports lead to action.

Following the Crimson Eye Halloween event, which ran from October 8 through November 1, Kinetic Games is turning its attention toward longer-term development. Earlier roadmap changes brought a commitment to clearer communication, and the studio currently targets late 2027 for version 1.0. Full Resonance patch notes will arrive at launch, while players are encouraged to report problems through the official Help Centre.

For further technical details, Kinetic Games has published its official Development Preview #22.

Ultimately, the Phasmophobia ghost hunting update is interesting because its improvements could reinforce each other. Clearer audio information, more deliberate ghost interactions and stronger performance would all support the same goal: making investigations more rewarding. The real test comes in late November, when players discover whether Resonance delivers that promise.
