Five games are opening their doors for Halloween, but not every Xbox player gets the same invitation. The latest Xbox free game trials include a subscription-free horror experience and four limited-time opportunities for Game Pass members. Choosing carefully matters, especially when some games disappear from the promotion earlier than others.
Microsoft’s final Free Play Days event of October 2026 runs into the first weekend of November. Instead of downloading everything, players can make better use of their time by matching each game to their preferred genre, checking its deadline and deciding whether a temporary discount justifies a purchase.
Which Xbox free game trials should you play first?
Dead by Daylight is the obvious starting point for anyone without Game Pass. Behaviour Interactive’s multiplayer horror game is available on Xbox consoles without a subscription until November 2. Its Haunted by Daylight event makes Halloween an especially fitting time to visit The Fog. New rifts can transport players across maps, while seasonal items and abilities change the usual rhythm of a match.
For subscribers who prefer genuine tension over competitive chases, Darkwood offers a different kind of nightmare. Acid Wizard Studio’s survival horror adventure divides your time between gathering supplies in unsettling forests and preparing a hideout for dangerous nights. There is no need to rely on jump scares when every missing resource can become a serious problem. Its trial ends November 1.
Players looking for demanding combat should prioritize WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Developed by Leenzee and published by 505 Games, this soulslike action RPG takes place in a troubled version of late-Ming China. Rival factions, deadly enemies and a disease that creates monsters make the Shu region a hostile place to explore. Because its free access also ends November 1, the weekend is a useful opportunity to test whether its combat and difficulty feel rewarding before spending money.
Two alternatives if Halloween horror is not your thing
Not everyone wants to spend October’s final weekend running from monsters. Spirittea is the gentler alternative, mixing small-town life with supernatural visitors. As the only resident who can see troublesome spirits, you must restore an old bathhouse, solve their problems and gradually get to know the community. Developed by Cheesemaster Games and published by No More Robots, it is a particularly appealing choice for players who enjoy relaxed management and exploration.
Meanwhile, EVERSPACE 2 trades haunted buildings for dangerous star systems. Rockfish Games’ single-player space shooter combines fast combat, exploration, puzzles and equipment upgrades throughout Cluster 34. It suits anyone who enjoys chasing better loot while developing their own approach to space battles.
Both games can also be tried on PC by eligible Game Pass members, unlike the console-only Dead by Daylight promotion. Their free access finishes on November 1. If you are dividing the weekend between platforms, that flexibility could make either game easier to fit into your schedule.
When each free weekend ends and which discounts matter
The important distinction is that only Dead by Daylight is available without a Game Pass subscription. The other four require Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential. These are temporary Free Play Days trials, not permanent additions to the Game Pass catalog.
Here is the practical breakdown of the five games, their deadlines and announced offers:
- Dead by Daylight: Free for all Xbox console players until November 2. Base game discounted by up to 60%, with selected DLC offers until November 4.
- WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers: Game Pass membership required; October 29–November 1. Both editions and the Deluxe Upgrade DLC are 30% off.
- Darkwood: Game Pass membership required; October 29–November 1. No specific promotional discount was announced.
- Spirittea: Game Pass membership required; October 29–November 1, including PC. The full game is 50% off.
- EVERSPACE 2: Game Pass membership required; October 29–November 1, including PC. The base game is 80% off, with up to 50% off Titans and Wrath of the Ancients expansions.
EVERSPACE 2 has the largest advertised base-game discount, making it worth investigating if its combat and exploration click with you. However, a bigger percentage does not automatically make a better purchase. WUCHANG’s 30% reduction may matter more to someone already interested in a substantial soulslike adventure, while Spirittea’s half-price offer could be attractive to players who enjoy slower experiences.
Dead by Daylight presents another calculation. Its trial extends beyond the other four games, and selected discounts last until November 4. That gives newcomers extra time to decide whether they enjoy its competitive multiplayer loop before committing to the base game or additional content.
How to download the games and keep your progress
On Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, open the Xbox Store, enter the Subscriptions tab and find the Free Play Days collection. Alternatively, visit an eligible game’s page on Xbox.com while signed in and follow its Microsoft Store installation option. The required membership will determine which trials your account can access.
There is an important benefit if you decide to buy a game after testing it: your progress, Gamerscore and unlocked achievements carry over. You are not starting from scratch simply because the free access period has ended. Nevertheless, continued play after the deadline requires owning the game or having another valid entitlement.
This distinction is especially relevant when comparing temporary promotions with ordinary subscription benefits. As Battle4Play previously explored in its coverage of Xbox Game Pass discounts and subscription value, the real appeal of Microsoft’s ecosystem depends on what individual players actually use. A short trial can help answer that question without committing to another purchase immediately.
It is also worth separating Free Play Days from permanent catalog announcements. Microsoft’s recent approach to subscriptions has made that distinction increasingly important, particularly as discussed in Battle4Play’s analysis of Call of Duty’s changing relationship with Game Pass. A free weekend gives you a chance to evaluate a game; it does not promise ongoing access through your membership.
Microsoft confirmed the dates and promotional conditions in its official Xbox Wire announcement. As usual, regional availability and discount percentages may vary, so check your local store before making a purchase.
Ultimately, the smartest way to approach these Xbox free game trials is to start with the games that expire on November 1, save Dead by Daylight for the longer Halloween window and buy only what you genuinely want to continue playing. Five opportunities sound generous, but your available gaming hours are still the most valuable resource.
