The biggest winner from Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch might not be Rockstar alone. With just 16 days remaining, GTA 6 PS5 sales estimates suggest Sony is capturing almost three-quarters of early console demand. That is a remarkable advantage before players can even enter Vice City.
According to figures attributed to analytics firm Sensor Tower, Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster has already generated more than $750 million through estimated pre-orders and early sales. However, the distribution between PlayStation and Xbox tells a more interesting story than the headline revenue.
GTA 6 PS5 sales reveal a striking console divide
Sensor Tower’s tracker, cited by Insider Gaming on November 3, estimates approximately 7.71 million copies across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Of those, around 5.74 million are attributed to PS5, representing roughly 74% of the total.
That translates into approximately $559 million in estimated PlayStation revenue. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X|S accounts for around 1.97 million units and $192 million, or approximately 26% of tracked sales.
In other words, the estimated PlayStation audience is nearly three times larger than its Xbox counterpart. The revenue gap alone approaches $367 million, although the figures are rounded.
Crucially, these are third-party estimates, not officially disclosed Rockstar or Take-Two sales results. Sensor Tower models worldwide pre-orders, units and revenue on a weekly basis. Its findings provide an indication of demand, but they should not be confused with audited publisher figures.
Why Sony’s early advantage matters beyond game sales
Rockstar is launching GTA VI on both current-generation console families on November 19, 2026. Nevertheless, an early lead of this size could make PlayStation the game’s largest initial console community if the estimated distribution continues.
That matters because a blockbuster can influence how players perceive a platform’s popularity. Friends deciding where to play, newcomers considering a console purchase and existing owners planning their next major game may all pay attention to where the largest audience gathers.
There is an important distinction, though. Strong GTA 6 PS5 sales would not automatically mean additional hardware sales for Sony. Some buyers already own compatible consoles, while others may have purchased their systems months earlier. Sensor Tower’s figures also do not establish how many new consoles the game will sell.
Nor does the current split prove anything about future multiplayer activity. As previously discussed in our coverage of GTA 6 Online’s uncertain release window, Rockstar has not confirmed when a successor to GTA Online will arrive.
The $1 billion milestone is getting closer, but is not guaranteed
The pace of estimated spending is another reason these numbers deserve attention.
Around two weeks ago, Sensor Tower’s tracker placed GTA VI pre-order revenue above $600 million. Its latest reading suggests the total has since grown by more than $100 million, alongside nearly 1.3 million additional units.
That is substantial movement before release day. Yet the precise growth rate cannot be calculated from rounded thresholds alone, and there is no guarantee that the same momentum will continue.
With approximately $750 million already estimated, reaching $1 billion would require roughly another $250 million before November 19. The milestone is possible, but it remains a scenario rather than a confirmed outcome.
Separately, research firm Newzoo has forecast nearly $5.2 billion in GTA VI revenue during its launch week. That projection is considerably larger, but it concerns a different reporting period and forecasting methodology. It should not be treated as an extension of Sensor Tower’s tracker or as money Rockstar has already collected.
November 10 could become another turning point for pre-orders
Rockstar’s latest confirmed pre-load arrangements add another variable to the final countdown.
Digital buyers will be able to begin preparing GTA VI on November 10, nine days before release. The game requires up to 212 GB of available storage, making advance installation particularly useful for players with slower internet connections.
For exact regional schedules and storage advice, our GTA 6 pre-load time guide for PS5 and Xbox explains how the download window works.
Pre-loading could encourage some undecided customers to complete their purchases before launch. However, Rockstar has not announced that the download window will produce a specific sales increase. Installing early also does not provide early access to the game.
Players can consult Rockstar’s official support website for information about pre-orders and launch preparation.
Ultimately, GTA 6 PS5 sales estimates point to a commanding early PlayStation advantage, but the real test begins when the game reaches stores on November 19. Will Sony maintain its apparent lead, or could Xbox narrow the gap once Rockstar’s biggest release finally becomes playable?
