Four days of early access, a completely new adventure and a crossbow-wielding hunter are now on the horizon for Final Fantasy XIV. Although Evercold has slipped into February 2027, the FFXIV Zephyr job gives players a compelling reason to look beyond the delay. Square Enix’s latest expansion is shaping up to be more than another chapter in Eorzea’s long-running journey.

Why Evercold’s new schedule matters for players

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will officially arrive on February 23, 2027, replacing its previously announced January launch window. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida confirmed the change during the Tokyo Fan Festival and personally accepted responsibility, explaining that the additional development time was intended to deliver the best possible experience.

However, players who pre-order will not need to wait until February 23. Early access begins on February 19, offering four days to explore the expansion before its general release. Pre-orders open on November 4, 2026.

The revised calendar also provides extra preparation time. Players can finish outstanding quests, organize equipment and decide which role to take into the new story. Evercold introduces patch 8.0 and begins the Godless Realms Saga, making this an especially important moment for anyone planning to return after a break.

FFXIV Zephyr job brings a different kind of ranged combat

The FFXIV Zephyr job is arguably the most intriguing gameplay reveal from Tokyo. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional ranged attacks, this physical ranged DPS combines a crossbow with an unusual companion: a winged familiar called Nephele.

Zephyrs originate from the mountains of Ilsabard, northeast of Eorzea. Their clothing and equipment reflect those freezing surroundings. Meanwhile, Nephele participates directly in combat, coordinating attacks with its master and providing party support in keeping with other physical ranged jobs.

The showcase also emphasizes agile evasive movement. That combination suggests a playstyle built around positioning, coordinated attacks and mobility, although Square Enix has not yet detailed the complete rotation or ability list. Players interested in fast-paced ranged combat will have plenty to investigate once the expansion arrives.

Importantly, the FFXIV Zephyr job starts at level 90, with its unlock quest located in Gridania. It will be playable from Evercold’s launch, giving returning adventurers a clear starting point. Alongside the previously revealed tank job Bastion, Zephyr also broadens the choices available to players looking for a different role in group content.

The Fourth could be Evercold’s biggest attraction

New jobs may dominate the conversation, but Evercold’s setting deserves equal attention. The Godless Realms Saga takes the Warrior of Light into the Fourth, opening a fresh narrative direction rather than simply extending familiar locations.

Square Enix has introduced two striking destinations: Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth, and Skioblaonir, the Realmship of Wind. Additional footage explores more environments across the Fourth, while a dungeon preview offers an early look at the challenges awaiting adventurers.

These reveals raise an interesting question about how exploration and storytelling will work together. Realmships associated with different elements suggest distinct environmental identities, but their precise narrative roles remain undisclosed. For now, their visual contrast provides one of the clearest indications of Evercold’s ambitions.

Several trailers accompanied the announcement, including the full release-date presentation, a dedicated Zephyr showcase, new-area footage and a dungeon preview.

Which Evercold edition is worth considering?

Evercold’s Standard Edition costs $44.99 in the United States. Meanwhile, the $64.99 Digital Collector’s Edition includes three in-game extras: the Valhallar Odin mount, Entreat Crystal emote and Crystal Skyltborg weapon glamour.

For physical collectors, the $255 Collector’s Box features a Warrior of Light Reaper statue, packaging decorated with Yoshitaka Amano artwork, a tapestry depicting the Fourth, an Ethos metal keychain and a Köttr plush. Crucially, the physical box alone does not include the expansion, so buyers should distinguish it from bundles containing a digital game code.

Evercold is scheduled for Windows PC, Steam, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The existing MMORPG is already available across these platforms. Full purchasing and bonus details can be checked through Square Enix’s official announcement.

Ultimately, the FFXIV Zephyr job may prove more memorable than the extra wait. Evercold now has a firm release date, two distinctive new jobs and a mysterious world to explore. The real test will come in February, when players discover whether its combat additions and new saga justify the extended development time.
