DAMON and BABY is about to become a more interesting proposition for both returning players and newcomers. Rather than reserving its next adventure for a new purchase, Arc System Works is bringing a free story expansion to existing digital owners while preparing a physical edition and a Nintendo Switch 2 version.
All three developments converge on February 18, 2027. However, there is an important distinction between receiving the new content for free and upgrading to Nintendo’s newer console. Understanding that difference is especially useful before deciding which version to buy.
DAMON and BABY gives existing players the new story for free
The upcoming DAMON and BABY: RISE OF THE ORACLE physical edition launches on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on Thursday, February 18, 2027. It combines the original adventure with an additional story chapter and further quality-of-life improvements.
More importantly, anyone who already owns the digital game will receive RISE OF THE ORACLE as a free update on the same date. That applies to the existing digital versions, which are available on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4 and Steam. The PC release arrived on March 25, 2026.
As confirmed in Arc System Works’ official announcement, the physical release is therefore not the only way to experience the additional chapter. For current owners, there is no need to purchase the boxed edition simply to access the new story.
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition adds another choice for buyers
Alongside the physical release, Arc System Works has announced a digital Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Players who own the original digital Switch version can move to that edition by purchasing an Upgrade Pass. Buyers of the new physical edition will also have access to this upgrade route.
However, the Upgrade Pass is not the same as the free story update. The additional chapter costs existing digital owners nothing, while the Switch 2 upgrade requires a separate purchase. Neither the Upgrade Pass price nor the physical edition price has been announced. Specific technical improvements for the Switch 2 version have not been detailed either.
This approach is particularly relevant as Nintendo supports two generations of hardware. Battle4Play recently examined how Switch 2 has passed 26.35 million units. Offering an upgrade path gives existing customers another option without requiring them to buy the entire game again.
Meanwhile, collectors have a different consideration. Our coverage of the uncertain future of physical games on Switch 2 explains why boxed releases deserve closer examination. In this case, Arc System Works has confirmed physical editions for Switch and PS5, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a digital release.
RISE OF THE ORACLE takes Damon into a world of Japanese folklore
The expansion changes the scenery dramatically. After a brief spell of peace, Damon receives an urgent plea: “Please, save the person I owe everything to…” The message draws him through a mysterious doorway and into Yomotsu-Hirasaka, an otherworld inspired by Japanese mythology.
Autumn foliage and the fragrance of sweet osmanthus define this new setting. Yet its peaceful appearance hides serious dangers. A mysterious demon capable of assuming forms associated with Japanese folklore monsters awaits, alongside several barriers that obstruct Damon’s progress.
To continue, Damon must gather the Three Sacred Treasures: the Yata no Kagami mirror, the Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi sword and the Yasakani no Magatama jewel. These legendary objects become central to his journey through the unfamiliar realm.
The expansion also introduces three characters with distinct roles. Yugeno Mikoto, also known as Mei, is an apprentice onmyoji who accompanies Damon. Her mentor, Izuna, is an enigmatic being who belongs to neither the demonic nor angelic worlds. Finally, Gedomaru, Mikoto’s servant, offers useful items in exchange for MANA.
What makes this direction appealing is the contrast with the original adventure. A bleak setting reminiscent of 1970s America gives way to Japanese supernatural imagery. Consequently, the additional chapter has a distinct identity without abandoning Damon’s existing story.
DAMON and BABY mixes demanding gunfights with exploration
For newcomers, the original game is a top-down twin-stick action-adventure shooter built around movement, positioning and careful weapon selection. Players aim in every direction while dodging enemy projectiles, making survival depend on more than raw firepower.
Its arsenal includes a handgun, machine gun, shotgun and RPG. Each weapon behaves differently in terms of range, ammunition capacity, reload speed and mobility. Melee attacks provide another way to handle close encounters, especially when ammunition becomes a concern.
Boss battles introduce enemies with individual attack patterns. Players looking for tougher encounters can also attempt Lord Bloodedge’s Trials, a series of high-difficulty challenges designed to test combat and movement skills.
Exploration adds another layer. Branching routes conceal passages, equipment and charms, while newly acquired abilities open areas that were previously inaccessible. Meanwhile, character builds combine weapons, skills, rings, charms and food buffs. A powerful offensive setup may work against one enemy, whereas another encounter might reward mobility and careful positioning.
At the center of this adventure is Damon, a demon who dreams of becoming the Great Demon King. Unfortunately for him, a curse prevents him from separating from a mysterious child. Their unlikely relationship provides the narrative foundation for the journey.
There is also offline two-player cooperative play. Instead of controlling another version of Damon, the second player takes charge of a cheerful dog companion who gathers items and helps during combat. It is a different approach to cooperation that complements the main character’s combat-focused role.
The February release makes the complete adventure easier to revisit
For someone discovering the game for the first time, the February physical edition offers the original campaign and its additional story together. Existing digital owners, on the other hand, can return for the new chapter without paying for that content again.
Switch players considering new hardware have a third option, although they should wait for further details about the Upgrade Pass before judging its value. The lack of confirmed pricing and technical specifications makes any direct comparison premature.
Ultimately, DAMON and BABY is taking an interesting route with RISE OF THE ORACLE. Instead of dividing its audience through a paid story expansion, Arc System Works is making the new adventure available to existing players while offering physical collectors and Switch 2 owners separate purchasing choices. Whether you return for the folklore-inspired chapter or discover Damon’s strange journey for the first time, February 18 is the date to remember.
