X-Men Game Rumor Hints at a New Playable Hero System

New Insomniac Games job listings have revived speculation about a team-based Marvel adventure. However, the biggest question is how its rumored heroes might play differently.

Rumor: The latest X-Men game rumor raises an interesting possibility for Insomniac Games: a superhero adventure built around several distinct playable heroes. New recruitment listings have fueled that theory, but they do not confirm an X-Men project. More importantly, they offer no official release date.

Rather than focusing only on a rumored 2030 launch, another question deserves attention. How could Insomniac make several mutants feel genuinely different to control?

Why an X-Men game rumor raises bigger gameplay questions

On October 28, 2026, Insomniac Games published several vacancies for an unnamed upcoming project. These included Staff Hero Designer, Senior Combat Designer and Senior Gameplay Programmer.

The hero design position references creating “one or more playable characters”. It also covers combat, traversal and the 3Cs: character, camera and controls.

Meanwhile, the other positions mention enemy AI, mini-bosses, large-scale boss encounters and ally behaviors. Those are concrete details from the recruitment descriptions. However, none identifies the project as an X-Men game.

Insider Gaming connected these vacancies with the long-rumored Marvel project. It also interpreted the references to playable characters as a possible clue about a larger roster.

Still, the wording leaves room for several explanations. A designer could work on multiple characters across development without every character becoming playable. Therefore, multiple playable X-Men remain speculation, not an established feature.

Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine offer two different blueprints

Insomniac already has experience with contrasting superhero abilities. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allowed players to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in 2023.

Although both heroes shared familiar traversal foundations, their combat options created meaningful differences. That approach demonstrated how character switching could work within a connected adventure.

Marvel’s Wolverine took another direction when it launched on PS5 on September 15, 2026. Its more linear structure centered on Logan as the sole playable protagonist.

A potential X-Men adventure could sit somewhere between those two designs. However, introducing several mutants would create challenges beyond simply adding another character selection option.

For example, different powers could demand different movement systems, camera behavior and enemy responses. A character specializing in ranged attacks might require encounters unlike those designed for close combat.

Likewise, an agile hero could approach environments differently from someone with greater physical strength. These are hypothetical design possibilities, not leaked gameplay features.

Interestingly, Marvel’s mutant characters are also appearing in other gaming projects. Battle4Play previously covered Phoenix and Cyclops movesets in Marvel Tokon, offering another perspective on how developers distinguish mutant abilities.

Ally AI could matter more than character switching

One overlooked detail in the recruitment descriptions concerns ally behaviors. This requirement could become particularly interesting if the X-Men game rumor proves accurate.

After all, the X-Men are traditionally a team. Their appeal comes not only from individual powers but also from cooperation between very different personalities and abilities.

That creates an intriguing design question. Could an Insomniac adventure emphasize teamwork even when players directly control only one hero?

For instance, computer-controlled companions could participate in combat while players manage the main character. Coordinated attacks might also provide opportunities for more elaborate boss encounters.

Nevertheless, the listings do not confirm a squad system, companion mechanics or cooperative multiplayer. Ally AI appears in many games, including projects without playable teams.

The same caution applies to large-scale bosses. Their presence in a job description does not establish mutant enemies, specific villains or a particular combat structure.

Even so, these requirements provide a useful framework for discussing the rumor. They suggest the studio needs expertise in systems that could support complex encounters, regardless of the project’s identity.

Why 2030 remains a rumored target, not a release date

The speculation has roots extending well beyond these October vacancies. In December 2023, Insomniac suffered a cyberattack that exposed internal documents.

Those leaked materials reportedly placed an X-Men project around 2030, following Marvel’s Wolverine. However, an internal planning target does not guarantee a final launch schedule.

More recently, accounts including @cosmic_marvel on X circulated claims about multiple playable characters and a possible 2030 release. The discussion attracted considerable attention, including nearly 10,000 likes on the cited post.

Social media popularity, however, cannot verify a development roadmap. Furthermore, the October job listings contain neither an X-Men reference nor a release window.

PlayStation 5 might seem a natural destination given Insomniac’s relationship with Sony. Yet no platform has been officially announced for this rumored project.

Readers following Sony’s upcoming releases can find additional coverage in Battle4Play’s PS5 news section.

Ultimately, the X-Men game rumor presents a more compelling question than its proposed release year. If Insomniac eventually develops a playable mutant team, how will it balance individual powers with teamwork? Until Sony, Marvel or Insomniac makes an announcement, that possibility remains unconfirmed.
