Gundam Battle Operation 3 could make teamwork more important than simply choosing the strongest mobile suit. Bandai Namco’s newly announced free-to-play action game combines large-scale mech battles with objectives that require pilots to leave their machines.

That combination creates an interesting tactical question. Should players concentrate on overwhelming firepower, or can a well-timed mission outside the cockpit change everything?

Announced on October 28, 2026, the project is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. Cross-play will connect both platforms, although Bandai Namco has not announced a release date.

Why Gundam Battle Operation 3 Makes Team Composition Essential

Winning a battle will involve more than controlling an impressive machine. Players enlist as mercenaries and participate in online team combat, where the composition of each squad plays a central role.

Every mobile suit combines ranged weapons, close-quarters attacks, and distinctive abilities. Consequently, choosing compatible machines could prove more valuable than assembling a team around individual preferences.

A unit designed around distant engagements offers different tactical opportunities from one suited to direct confrontations. Meanwhile, unique skills introduce another consideration when organizing a squad.

These differences suggest that coordination will influence how effectively players approach each encounter. However, Bandai Namco has not detailed every possible team combination or combat strategy.

The broader appeal lies in giving players meaningful choices before combat begins. Rather than treating every mobile suit as interchangeable, the announced design places importance on how different capabilities work together.

Gundam Battle Operation 3 Takes Combat Beyond the Cockpit

Perhaps the most interesting feature involves what happens when players abandon their mobile suits. On-foot actions will form part of the battlefield experience, rather than keeping every objective inside a giant machine.

Pilots can plant explosives at an opposing base, request supporting fire, and capture objectives. Each action introduces another responsibility beyond exchanging attacks with enemy units.

For example, a team might need to consider whether pursuing an enemy is more important than securing an objective. Similarly, support fire could influence how players coordinate their next move.

Of course, the announcement does not explain every interaction between infantry activities and mobile suit combat. Nevertheless, these mechanics establish an important distinction: controlling territory matters alongside defeating opponents.

That emphasis offers an interesting comparison with other multiplayer games. Battle4Play recently examined the debate surrounding cooperative gameplay in Arc Raiders, where different approaches to combat create different player expectations.

Gundam follows its own direction. Instead of focusing exclusively on combat encounters, its announced mechanics encourage players to think about battlefield responsibilities.

A Gundam Roster Connecting Different Anime Eras

Another important element concerns the franchises represented at launch. Bandai Namco has confirmed selections from both Universal Century and Alternative Gundam works.

The initial lineup draws from these series:

  • Mobile Suit Gundam, representing the original Universal Century setting.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, expanding that selection.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, adding another Universal Century entry.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, representing the Alternative works.

Furthermore, the development team intends to introduce two to three additional Alternative series during the first year. Specific additions have not been identified.

This approach gives the game room to expand beyond its initial selection. However, players should distinguish confirmed launch representation from future content plans.

Bandai Namco has another anime-inspired project attracting attention. Our earlier coverage explored the September 17 Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 showcase, highlighting another franchise connected to the publisher.

For Gundam enthusiasts, the immediate attraction is seeing different series represented within a shared team-based battlefield.

Cross-Play, Base Camp and the November Network Tests

Beyond combat, Gundam Battle Operation 3 includes a social space called Base Camp. Here, mercenary pilots can connect with other players between operations.

Combined with PS5 and PC cross-play, this feature supports the game’s emphasis on an international community. English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese language options are confirmed.

Meanwhile, realistic 3D graphics aim to communicate the cinematic scale of giant mobile suits. The combination of enormous machines and a shared gathering space could help establish a distinct atmosphere between battles.

Before release, Bandai Namco will conduct a Japan-only cross-play network test on November 20 and 22, 2026. Both days feature three testing windows, using Japan Standard Time:

  • 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • 9:00 PM to midnight

An additional open network test is also planned to welcome more participants. However, further scheduling details remain unannounced.

Players can follow the project through its official Steam page while waiting for more information.

Ultimately, Gundam Battle Operation 3 presents an appealing tactical idea: powerful machines alone should not define a successful team. How effectively pilots combine their abilities, objectives, and battlefield decisions may become its most compelling feature.

Will players embrace the freedom to fight outside their mobile suits, or will giant robot combat remain the main attraction?
