Genshin Impact Anastasya holds a glowing ice chess king by a palace window overlooking Novokitezhgrad under an aurora.

The next major turning point in Snezhnaya may depend on a ruler who no longer trusts her own past. Genshin Impact Anastasya has officially been revealed as the Cryo Archon, bringing one of Teyvat’s most mysterious figures closer to becoming playable. However, her introduction raises a more intriguing question than when players can recruit her: what happens when someone fighting the Heavenly Principles cannot fully believe her own memories?

HoYoverse unveiled Anastasya on November 6, 2026, through official artwork and two character introductions. According to Siliconera, she is set to become playable in Version 7.3 and is expected to headline the update as a five-star character. There is no officially announced Version 7.3 release date yet.

Why Genshin Impact Anastasya matters to Snezhnaya’s future

Version 7.2, titled “Hour of Ruin,” has been live since early November. Meanwhile, the ongoing 7.x storyline has placed Snezhnaya at the center of Genshin Impact, with regional characters such as Odette, Alyosha, Vesna, Vodyanitsa, Mitya and Valeriy expanding its cast.

Anastasya’s introduction changes the perspective. Rather than learning about Snezhnaya only through its inhabitants, players are now being introduced directly to the figure responsible for ruling it. Her official titles are “Anastasya: Frostcrown Revival” and “Tsaritsa of All Snezhnaya.” Her Constellation is named “Autocratrix Anastasis.”

As an Archon, she possesses a Cryo Gnosis instead of a Vision. Furthermore, her playable identity uses her personal name, following the naming approach seen with Nahida and Mavuika. Although these details establish who she is, HoYoverse has not revealed her playable combat abilities or weapon.

Genshin Impact Anastasya lore: a ruler who fears her memories

Story spoiler warning: The following paragraphs discuss revelations from Anastasya’s official character introduction, including her origins, resurrection and relationship with the Heavenly Principles.

Anastasya was originally a spirit born of frost. Long before her current reign, she served Monomakh at the court of the Pale Star, during a happier period that eventually disappeared. Her life then took an extraordinary turn when the Heavenly Principles resurrected her.

For centuries, she wandered through the snow searching for the person she had once been. Yet her journey uncovered a disturbing truth: even her emotions could be manipulated. Eventually, she stopped pursuing her lost identity after confirming something more personal. Whoever she had been, that earlier self had genuinely experienced love.

That discovery helps explain her present outlook. Anastasya no longer places unquestioning faith in either memory or emotion. Instead, she has abandoned old grudges and chosen to live in the present, watching over the threat described as a sword hanging above everyone.

Her responsibility extends beyond Snezhnaya to the wider world. Consequently, her harsh decisions cannot be understood simply as cruelty. The official description also suggests that people who grow close to her can recognize warmth beneath her cold exterior.

This contradiction gives the Cryo Archon an unusual narrative foundation. Her greatest struggle may not be against an external enemy alone, but against the uncertainty surrounding her own identity.

The chess symbolism hints at a dangerous choice

Perhaps the most revealing part of Anastasya’s introduction concerns chess. The official writing challenges the idea that checkmate necessarily marks the end of a game. Moreover, when facing the Heavenly Principles, even the King is described as another piece on the board.

The imagery introduces the possibility of a necessary sacrifice. However, HoYoverse has not confirmed who or what might be sacrificed, nor does the announcement establish the outcome of any future confrontation.

There is another important detail in the second character introduction. Witch J, identified as Ioanna Ivanovna of the Hexenzirkel, recalls playing chess with the Tsaritsa and noticing the sorrow concealed in her eyes.

Placed alongside Anastasya’s troubled history, this memory adds a personal dimension to the strategic language. Chess is not merely a metaphor for political power here. It also reflects a ruler who may understand the cost of her decisions before anyone else does.

For Battle4Play, that is the most compelling aspect of the reveal. The narrative appears interested in the emotional price of leadership, rather than presenting the Cryo Archon solely as an overwhelmingly powerful figure.

What players should expect from Version 7.3 and Danica

With Genshin Impact Anastasya now officially introduced, attention naturally turns toward Version 7.3. Siliconera identifies that update as her playable debut and expects her to be its headline five-star character. Nevertheless, HoYoverse has not announced an exact release date, banner schedule, weapon or combat kit.

Players planning ahead should therefore distinguish confirmed character information from assumptions about gameplay. Meanwhile, the November 7 reveal introduced another Snezhnayan character: Danica, the “Winter Palace’s Attendant.” She serves as head maid of the Zapolyarny Palace and is described as the Tsaritsa’s most loyal attendant. Her background is equally notable, having trained under the Fatui Harbinger known as The Captain and previously worked as a mercenary.

Danica’s arrival in official promotional material further develops the world surrounding the Tsaritsa. However, HoYoverse has not specified which version will introduce her, so connecting her to Version 7.3 would be premature.

Interestingly, HoYoverse is also exploring major playable figures in its other RPGs. Our coverage of Honkai: Star Rail’s playable Aha and Version 4.7 Elation teams examines a separate example of a powerful lore figure entering the playable roster.

Genshin Impact remains free-to-play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, iOS and Android. For now, the strongest reason to follow Genshin Impact Anastasya is not an unannounced gameplay mechanic, but the question her introduction leaves unresolved: how far will the Tsaritsa go to protect a world she no longer views through the certainty of her own past?
