Skyrim’s 15th anniversary is approaching, but players don’t need to wait for another Elder Scrolls announcement to revisit its frozen landscapes. ESO free Skyrim content is expanding throughout November, giving newcomers and returning adventurers access to two major story regions without purchasing their original expansions.
The Elder Scrolls Online has already opened Western Skyrim through Greymoor. On November 9, 2026, Markarth joins the base game too. Better still, a limited-time reward campaign arrives on the same day. Here’s what you can explore, which activities are worth prioritizing, and when the opportunities end.
ESO free Skyrim content: what can you play right now?
Since October 21, the Greymoor Chapter has been included with the ESO base game at no additional cost. This opens Western Skyrim, including Solitude, and the underground realm of Blackreach. Both locations feature in the Dark Heart of Skyrim storyline, originally released in 2020.
However, Greymoor offers more than quests and familiar scenery. Its Antiquities system lets players discover leads, excavate buried treasures and pursue collectibles across Tamriel. The update also includes Kyne’s Aegis, a 12-player Trial designed for coordinated groups seeking a tougher challenge.
Wolfhunter has also joined the base game. Its two Hircine-themed dungeons, March of Sacrifices and Moon Hunter Keep, now have new single-player versions introduced with Season Two. These adaptations offer adjustable difficulty and additional rewards, making them an attractive option for adventurers who prefer playing alone.
Why November 9 is the best time to return to Skyrim
The biggest change arrives on November 9, when Markarth becomes part of the ESO base game. Players gain access to The Reach and its storyline, completing the central narrative of the Dark Heart of Skyrim saga without needing to purchase the original Markarth DLC separately.
For anyone experiencing this adventure for the first time, the sensible approach is to begin with Greymoor before moving into Markarth. Although ESO offers considerable freedom in how players explore Tamriel, following that sequence preserves the progression of the 2020 storyline and makes its conclusion more satisfying.
November 9 also marks the beginning of Return to Western Skyrim, a Golden Pursuits campaign running until December 2. Players can earn rewards by exploring, adventuring and digging up Antiquities throughout Western Skyrim. Available incentives include a pet, a mount and Antiquities leads.
There’s an important distinction here: Markarth is becoming part of the base game, while Golden Pursuits is a temporary event. Consequently, anyone interested in its collectibles should prioritize the campaign before December 2 rather than rushing through permanent story content.
Which ESO rewards and events have deadlines?
Echoes of Skyrim runs from October 21, 2026, until January 27, 2027, across PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox. All gameplay additions in Season Two are free to base-game owners. The optional premium Tamriel Tome remains a separate purchase.
The seasonal Tome includes a free reward track alongside premium options featuring monster-hunting-themed collectibles, including the Maarselok Slayer Mammoth mount. Players should therefore distinguish between the free seasonal activities and rewards restricted to paid tiers.
Meanwhile, several dates deserve attention. The Witches Festival ends November 4, leaving little time to finish any outstanding Halloween activities. Whitestrake’s Mayhem follows from November 12 through November 23, offering additional incentives for players interested in PvP.
Looking further ahead, January 6 introduces another Golden Pursuits campaign centered on the Nowhere Vault. January 19 brings quality-of-life improvements and the beginning of a new PvP season, with PvP seasons lasting approximately six months. Update 52, which introduces Season Three content, is already being tested on the PC/Mac Public Test Server.
Why Skyrim’s anniversary makes this return especially timely
The timing is difficult to overlook. The original The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched on November 11, 2011, meaning its 15th anniversary falls just two days after Markarth becomes free. For longtime fans, ESO offers an opportunity to experience a different chapter of the province’s history while revisiting recognizable locations.
Importantly, The Elder Scrolls Online isn’t simply multiplayer Skyrim. Its story takes place in an earlier period of Tamriel’s history, with different conflicts, characters and political circumstances. That distinction gives returning Skyrim players something genuinely new to discover, even when exploring familiar regions.
There is also speculation that Bethesda might reveal the official title of The Elder Scrolls VI around the anniversary, with rumors surrounding The Elder Scrolls VI and the possible Sentinel title adding to the discussion. However, no such announcement has been confirmed, and players should treat that possibility as a rumor rather than an established part of the celebration.
For now, the more practical opportunity is already confirmed. With Greymoor available, Markarth arriving November 9 and a reward campaign continuing into December, ESO free Skyrim content provides a substantial reason to revisit Tamriel. The real question is whether you’ll spend your time uncovering Blackreach’s secrets, finishing the Dark Heart saga or hunting down limited-time collectibles first.
