For Remedy Entertainment, selling a million copies of its latest game may only be the beginning. The early Control Resonant sales figures reveal something potentially more valuable: almost half of its players had never experienced the series before. That gives the Finnish developer an opportunity to turn a successful sequel into a much larger franchise.
Released on September 24, 2026, Control Resonant has already become the fastest-selling game in Remedy’s history. However, the company’s November 3 financial report suggests that its real achievement could extend well beyond an impressive launch.
Control Resonant sales are bringing in a new audience
One of the most revealing details in Remedy’s third-quarter report concerns who is actually playing its new adventure. Almost half of Control Resonant’s audience consists of newcomers to the series. For a sequel to a game released seven years earlier, that is a particularly encouraging sign.
Sequels often depend on established fans. Yet attracting people unfamiliar with the original Control was one of Remedy’s stated objectives. These early figures suggest the studio is making progress without relying entirely on players who already know its supernatural universe.
Geographically, the United States was Control Resonant’s largest market, accounting for nearly half of all sales. However, the rankings differed by platform. On PC, Chinese-speaking regions and the United Kingdom ranked second and third, respectively. On consoles, the United States was followed by the United Kingdom and Canada.
There is an important distinction, though. New players do not automatically guarantee long-term franchise loyalty. Remedy still needs to convince them to remain interested after completing the adventure. Nevertheless, reaching this audience creates possibilities that strong opening sales alone cannot provide.
The original Control is benefiting from the sequel
Perhaps the clearest indication of that broader potential comes from a game released in 2019. According to Remedy, the original Control sold more copies during the July-September quarter than in either of the two preceding quarters. Its sales also exceeded those recorded during the same period in 2025.
That matters because a sequel can sometimes overshadow its predecessor. In this case, the opposite appears to be happening. Interest surrounding Control Resonant is encouraging players to discover, or return to, the adventure that established the franchise.
The relationship between both releases could become particularly valuable over time. Someone discovering Control Resonant today may decide to explore the earlier game afterward. Meanwhile, returning fans have another reason to revisit the setting and its mysteries.
It is a different measure of success from the launch figures highlighted in our coverage of Phantom Blade Zero’s remarkable sales debut. An explosive opening demonstrates immediate demand, whereas renewed interest in an older title can indicate that an entire series is gaining momentum.
Why Remedy’s financial recovery needs some perspective
Remedy’s latest financial results are undeniably encouraging. Revenue reached €39.6 million during the third quarter of 2026, representing an increase of 226% compared with the corresponding period last year.
The company also reported an operating profit of €0.6 million. That contrasts sharply with the €16.4 million operating loss recorded during the third quarter of 2025. The release of Control Resonant played a major role in this improvement.
However, there is an important detail behind those numbers. Control Resonant launched on September 24, meaning only its initial seven days of sales, alongside preorders, contributed to the reporting period. Its subsequent commercial performance will become clearer in later financial results.
Furthermore, Remedy developed and published the game itself. That gives the company greater responsibility for its commercial strategy, including marketing and distribution expenses. It also means the studio has a more direct role in shaping the future of its own intellectual property.
Chief executive Jean-Charles Gaudechon considers the release a defining milestone. His immediate priority is expanding the game’s audience while maintaining a disciplined approach to investment. Other projects, including the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake, continue moving forward.
Still, a profitable quarter is not the same as a permanently profitable business. Remedy must demonstrate that Control Resonant can continue generating revenue beyond its initial burst of demand.
A striking action game with a bigger challenge ahead
Control Resonant was revealed at The Game Awards 2025 before arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store in September 2026. A Mac version is also planned for later this year.
Its third-person action takes players into a fractured urban landscape where skyscrapers bend unnaturally, debris floats above ruined streets and supernatural creatures threaten the protagonist. Glowing red and orange powers add another distinctive element to its combat encounters.
That unusual presentation has helped the game stand out. Critics have praised its visual direction and action, although reactions to the story have been more divided. Some reviewers consider its narrative less memorable than the original Control’s.
This contrast is worth watching. Remedy has built much of its reputation through atmospheric storytelling, particularly across Control and Alan Wake. Spectacular combat may attract newcomers, but memorable characters and mysteries can help sustain interest between releases.
The company announced that Control Resonant surpassed one million copies sold in approximately three weeks. It now faces a familiar challenge for successful franchises: converting early attention into lasting engagement.
As another example of how commercial milestones can influence future plans, our examination of the future of Borderlands after its franchise sales milestone explores why building on an established series requires more than celebrating impressive numbers.
Remedy has reason to feel optimistic, but its next steps will matter just as much as its launch. Continued visibility, positive recommendations and the forthcoming Mac release could help the game reach additional audiences. None of those outcomes is guaranteed, however.
For now, the most interesting aspect of Control Resonant sales is not simply how quickly copies are moving. It is the possibility that Remedy has found a way to introduce its unusual universe to a much wider audience while bringing its original adventure back into the spotlight. Whether that momentum lasts will determine how significant this milestone ultimately becomes.
