Before John Wick became a legend audiences could follow, he had to survive one final night as an assassin. That night has remained one of the franchise’s biggest unanswered questions. Now, John Wick’s Impossible Task will finally become the focus of an animated prequel, with Keanu Reeves returning to voice the character who made him an action icon.

Lionsgate has officially approved the project, turning a long-discussed piece of the assassin’s past into a story of its own. Rather than continuing the events of the live-action films, this production will explore the violent decision that made Wick’s brief escape from his former life possible.

John Wick will finally show the night that changed his life

The Impossible Task has always carried enormous weight in the John Wick mythology, despite audiences never seeing it happen. Before the events of the original movie, Wick wanted to leave his work behind and build a future with Helen. However, walking away from his obligations to the High Table required something extraordinary.

His way out was a seemingly impossible assignment: eliminate all his rivals in a single night. Completing that mission would release him from his obligations and allow him to pursue a life with the woman he loved. The films established the importance of this achievement through references to Wick’s past, but never showed the operation itself.

That distinction gives the animated prequel an unusually strong narrative foundation. Viewers already know Wick survives, so the suspense cannot depend on whether he completes the mission. Instead, the real intrigue lies in how he accomplishes it, what the assignment demands of him and how the experience might illuminate the character audiences eventually meet.

There is also a compelling contrast at the heart of the story. The original film begins with a grieving man being dragged back into violence. This prequel moves in the opposite direction, following an assassin whose extraordinary violence is intended to secure a peaceful future. It is the beginning of his attempted escape, rather than another chapter of his revenge.

Keanu Reeves returns as Lionsgate officially approves the animated prequel

Lionsgate confirmed the animated film’s greenlight during its quarterly earnings presentation on November 5, 2026. As Deadline reported following the company’s announcement, Keanu Reeves has finalized his agreement to reprise John Wick through voice acting. He will also serve as a producer.

The project was initially unveiled at CinemaCon in April 2025. Its official approval therefore represents a meaningful step beyond that first announcement. Although production details are now clearer, Lionsgate has not provided a release date, a confirmed animation studio or additional voice casting information.

Here are the key confirmed details about the animated film:

  • Story: A prequel set before the first John Wick movie, depicting the Impossible Task that allows the assassin to leave his obligations behind and pursue a future with Helen.
  • Returning actor: Keanu Reeves will voice John Wick and also produce the film.
  • Director: Emmy winner Shannon Tindle, whose credits include Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings.
  • Screenwriters: Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, known for Eternals.
  • Producers: Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, reuniting the producing team behind the live-action films.
  • Additional production company: Point Grey joins the project.
  • Executive producer: Nathan Kahane.

Keeping the established production team involved is particularly relevant. The John Wick films have built their identity around carefully staged action and a recognizable criminal underworld. Consequently, the challenge for the animated prequel will be to preserve those defining qualities while allowing its new medium to offer something different.

Animation could give the Impossible Task a different visual identity

Choosing animation for this particular story makes sense beyond simply expanding the franchise into another format. The Impossible Task is presented as an almost unbelievable accomplishment, even within a fictional world populated by exceptionally dangerous assassins. Animation offers the creative team an opportunity to depict that reputation without being limited to the visual language of the live-action installments.

Shannon Tindle’s involvement is especially interesting in this context. His work on Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings provides experience with visually distinctive animated storytelling. Nevertheless, Lionsgate has not revealed the film’s final animation style, so it would be premature to assume that either production establishes its appearance.

Chad Stahelski has already explained why the medium appeals to him. When the project was announced in 2025, he described anime as a major creative influence, particularly on the John Wick series, and viewed developing an animated installment as a natural progression for its world.

That connection creates an opportunity to explore the assassin’s abilities from a different perspective. The live-action films are famous for the physical precision of their fights. An animated interpretation could instead emphasize the scale and near-mythical reputation of the Impossible Task, provided the filmmakers choose that direction.

Animation is also becoming a useful way for established screen properties to revisit familiar characters without simply repeating their original format. Netflix, for example, is developing an animated Twilight adaptation of Midnight Sun planned across two seasons. While the projects differ significantly in tone and audience, both illustrate how animation can provide another perspective on recognizable fictional worlds.

John Wick has two more projects moving forward alongside the prequel

The animated film is not an isolated addition to Lionsgate’s plans. It is one of three John Wick projects currently in development, each approaching the franchise from a different direction. Together, they offer opportunities to revisit the central assassin, continue his live-action story and expand the world through another established character.

The other confirmed projects are:

  • John Wick: Chapter 5: Another live-action installment featuring Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin. Further story and release details have not been confirmed.
  • Caine: A spin-off centered on the character played by Donnie Yen. Yen both stars in and directs the film, which has already been shot.

These productions also serve different storytelling purposes. Chapter 5 represents the continuation of Wick’s cinematic presence, while Caine allows another assassin to occupy the spotlight. Meanwhile, the animated prequel reaches backward into the history that shaped the franchise’s central figure.

That approach is particularly useful for a series with an established mythology. Rather than relying entirely on new threats or escalating confrontations, Lionsgate can explore events that were already important to the characters but previously existed outside the audience’s view.

Familiar characters keep finding new ways back to the screen

Elsewhere in cinema, recognizable characters are finding fresh directions through different creative partnerships. David Fincher’s new Cliff Booth film, written by Quentin Tarantino, provides another example of a familiar screen character returning under a different director. John Wick’s animated adventure takes that idea further by changing both the creative perspective and the storytelling medium.

For now, the most intriguing aspect of John Wick’s animated prequel is not how many enemies the assassin will defeat, but what audiences might discover about the man who wanted to stop killing. The Impossible Task has defined his legend for years. Soon, viewers will have the chance to see the event behind that reputation, although Lionsgate has yet to say when the film will arrive.
