A distinctive approach to RPG combat is getting another opportunity to reach modern audiences. The new gunplay RPG remaster of Resonance of Fate brings tri-Ace’s unusual adventure to PlayStation 5 and PC, adding technical improvements and a feature that could make a considerable difference during longer play sessions: double-speed gameplay.

However, this return is about more than improving image quality. With its unusual combat mechanics and memorable steampunk setting, Resonance of Fate has always offered something different from traditional Japanese role-playing games. Now, its latest edition gives players another reason to discover what made it stand out.

A second upgrade for an RPG that never followed the usual rules

Originally released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Resonance of Fate was developed by tri-Ace and published by SEGA. It later received the 4K/HD Edition in 2018, bringing the adventure to PlayStation 4 and PC.

Eight years after that previous remaster, the developer has introduced another enhanced version. The new edition is available on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam, with tri-Ace handling both development and publishing.

The technical improvements include upscaled textures for characters, towns and environments. Players can also activate an optional image filter through the settings to sharpen smaller details, including character hair.

On PC, the expanded graphics options go further. Native 4K output, HDR and frame rates of up to 120 FPS are supported, giving players more control over how they experience the adventure.

Why the 2x speed option could matter more than better graphics

Visual improvements are welcome, particularly for a game with such a distinctive artistic identity. Nevertheless, the most interesting addition might actually be the new 2x Game Speed option.

Resonance of Fate features a combat system called Hero Action. It combines turn-based strategy with acrobatic movements, spectacular jumps and carefully planned gunfire. This approach gives battles a very particular rhythm, requiring players to think about positioning and their next moves.

That complexity is part of the game’s identity. However, lengthy encounters and repeated activities can also make an RPG more demanding to revisit.

The new speed setting allows players to accelerate exploration, battles and story events. Consequently, returning players have an additional way to move through familiar sections without removing the strategic foundations of the combat system.

It is a practical improvement rather than a complete gameplay redesign, and that distinction is important.

Basel, three mercenaries and a world built around survival

The setting remains one of the strongest reasons to experience this adventure. Resonance of Fate takes place on a devastated Earth where humanity survives around Basel, an enormous machine responsible for controlling the cycle of life and death.

Players follow three mercenaries: Zephyr, Vashyron and Leanne. Their journey takes place in a world shaped by a rigid social structure, dangerous missions and an uncertain future.

The game’s combat also deserves particular attention. Rather than relying on conventional sword-based encounters or straightforward magic systems, tri-Ace built its experience around firearms and elaborate acrobatic attacks.

Music is another important part of the package. The soundtrack features compositions by Motoi Sakuraba and Kohei Tanaka, helping establish the atmosphere of this unusual science-fiction adventure.

Prices, upgrade options and what existing owners should know

On PlayStation 5, Resonance of Fate Enhanced Remaster is available as a standalone purchase for $34.99 or €34.99. Players do not need to own the previous 4K/HD Edition to buy this version. Meanwhile, owners of the PlayStation 4 edition can upgrade to the Enhanced Remaster for $9.99.

On PC, the purchasing process is different. The Enhanced Remaster is distributed as downloadable content on Steam, meaning players must own Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition first and then purchase the upgrade. The PC upgrade costs $9.99 or €10.25.

The announced regional prices also include £28.99 and 4,070 yen for the new release. Consequently, players should check their platform and existing ownership before deciding which purchasing option applies to them.

Ultimately, this release highlights an interesting approach to preserving older RPGs. Instead of changing the original experience, tri-Ace is improving its presentation while introducing an option that addresses the pace of longer adventures.

The gunplay RPG remaster could therefore be an appealing opportunity for both returning fans and curious newcomers. Do you think more classic JRPGs should receive this kind of upgrade, or would you prefer completely new instalments?
