For the first time in the mainline series, God of War is preparing to tell its story through someone other than Kratos. That makes the God of War Laufey delay more than an inconvenient calendar change. Sony’s next major mythological adventure now has extra time to prove that Faye can carry the franchise on her own.

Santa Monica Studio has moved its upcoming PS5 adventure from February 16 to May 20, 2027. The roughly three-month postponement changes when players will experience Faye’s journey, but it also raises an interesting question: can additional development time help establish a new identity for one of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises?

Why the God of War Laufey delay matters beyond its release date

Santa Monica Studio confirmed the revised schedule on November 4, 2026, explaining that the team needs more time to polish the experience and realize its full potential. The developer also thanked players for their enthusiasm since the game’s June reveal and indicated that further updates are coming.

Importantly, the studio has not announced a change of direction. God of War Laufey remains a PlayStation 5 release developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Its latest statement contains no additional announcements concerning platforms, editions or pricing.

However, the timing deserves attention. February would have placed the adventure near the beginning of 2027, whereas May gives the studio approximately three additional months. That breathing room could be valuable for final adjustments, although Sony has not identified any specific technical or gameplay problems behind the decision.

For players, this distinction matters. A delay does not automatically indicate troubled development. Equally, a promise of extra polish is not proof that every concern has already been resolved. What matters now is how convincingly the finished game delivers on its unusually ambitious premise.

Faye faces a challenge Kratos never had to overcome

God of War Laufey is not simply another adventure with a different playable character. It reverses one of the franchise’s most familiar narrative relationships. Instead of following Kratos through a world shaped by the loss of his wife, players will experience a story centered on Faye, also known as Laufey the Just.

Fans of God of War (2018) already understand her importance. Faye is Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, and her death provides the emotional starting point for that game’s journey. Yet much of her personality, her decisions and her experiences remain outside the player’s direct perspective.

The new adventure changes that relationship. According to its official premise, Faye awakens in an unfamiliar realm after her own funeral. She soon discovers that her preparations to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger of failing.

Her search takes her into the Everywhen, an afterlife inhabited by gods from different mythologies. There, powerful divine figures compete for control while dangerous magic threatens anyone caught between their ambitions.

This setting creates an intriguing contrast with the recent Norse games. Kratos often struggles with the consequences of his violent past and his responsibilities as a father. Faye, meanwhile, begins her playable story with a different motivation: preserving the future of the family she has left behind.

That distinction could become the game’s greatest strength. Rather than relying entirely on nostalgia for Kratos, Santa Monica Studio has an opportunity to explore familiar relationships through a character whose perspective has largely remained unseen. Of course, the studio still needs to demonstrate how that difference translates into moment-to-moment gameplay.

What PS5 players should watch before May 2027

The revised release date also gives fans more time to evaluate the game’s presentation, combat and overall identity before launch. Although the premise establishes an unusual supernatural setting, it does not answer every question about how Faye’s abilities will distinguish her from previous God of War protagonists.

Another practical consideration involves the game’s premium merchandise. Sony previously announced a God of War Laufey Collector Box priced at $150 without a copy of the game. Consequently, anyone interested in both the collectibles and the adventure itself should remember that they are separate purchases.

The November 4 announcement does not specify whether the postponement affects merchandise delivery schedules. Therefore, buyers should avoid assuming that every related product automatically moves to May. Checking official retailer information remains the sensible approach.

Meanwhile, PlayStation fans have other upcoming releases and presentations to follow. One particularly interesting example is the Until Dawn 2 gameplay showcase scheduled for December 2026, which should offer another opportunity to assess a major PlayStation project before its planned launch.

For God of War Laufey, however, the next official update will be especially important. Players already know who they will control, why she must enter the Everywhen and when Sony intends to release the game. What remains less clear is how its supernatural adventure will feel in practice.

The God of War Laufey delay ultimately gives Santa Monica Studio more time to deliver something the series has never attempted in a mainline installment: a complete adventure led by Faye. May 20, 2027, is now the date to remember, but the bigger question is whether her journey can redefine what players expect from God of War.
