Bill & Ted Arcade Game Brings Time Travel Back to 16-Bit

The cult comedy returns as a 15-level pixel-art adventure with couch co-op, historical challenges and an unmistakable 1980s spirit.

Some films seem made for video games, even if their best ideas take decades to find the right format. The new Bill & Ted arcade game is taking that opportunity with a 16-bit adventure built around time travel, historical encounters and two friends who were never particularly good at homework.

Rather than simply recreating a famous comedy, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Arcade could turn its strangest premise into an entertaining gameplay loop. After all, collecting famous people from different centuries sounds far more interesting when players actually have to earn their cooperation.

Why Bill & Ted’s history report works as an arcade adventure

The original 1989 film followed Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted Theodore Logan, two students from San Dimas who needed an extraordinary history presentation to avoid academic disaster. Their solution involved a time-travelling phone booth and a collection of guests who had no business being in a modern California classroom.

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter made that unlikely adventure memorable through their chemistry and the film’s playful approach to history. Its popularity eventually produced sequels in 1991 and 2020. Now, Art of Play Interactive and publishing partner Roditeli Productions are giving the premise a new interactive interpretation. The game will also feature the voices of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, according to its official BackerKit page.

What makes this adaptation interesting is its choice of structure. Instead of relying exclusively on familiar movie scenes, the developers are building 15 side-scrolling levels around a journey through different periods. Players must gather material for their report while trying to protect the future.

That combination creates room for something beyond a conventional movie tie-in: an adventure where completing the school assignment is as important to the premise as surviving each encounter.

A Bill & Ted arcade game where history becomes the challenge

Fighting through enemies is only part of the experience. Bill and Ted must also track down Billy the Kid, Socrates, Napoleon, Beethoven and Genghis Khan. However, finding these historical figures does not automatically convince them to join the adventure.

Each encounter involves a distinct mini-game that players must overcome to win that character’s support. The developers have not detailed every challenge, so the exact mechanics remain unknown. Nevertheless, the concept suggests a welcome change of pace between traditional action sequences.

This is where the adaptation has an opportunity to establish its own personality. A game based on Bill and Ted should be unpredictable, funny and slightly chaotic. Historical mini-games could provide that variety without abandoning the movie’s central objective.

There is also a progression incentive. Completing story mode unlocks arcade mode, mini-games and additional content. As a result, the campaign is intended to be more than a single journey through the story, although the extent of its replay value remains to be seen.

Couch co-op could be the feature that makes it click

Bill and Ted have always worked best as a pair. Fortunately, the developers have preserved that relationship in the gameplay. Players can choose either character for a solo adventure or join forces through two-player local couch co-op.

That decision feels particularly appropriate for a retro-inspired release. Sharing a screen, reacting to unexpected encounters and working through arcade challenges together could capture the social atmosphere of older console games.

Visually, the project embraces hand-crafted pixel art and a 16-bit aesthetic. An energetic soundtrack influenced by 1980s rock completes the presentation. Together, these elements connect the game’s arcade identity with the musical personality associated with the films.

Of course, attractive pixel art alone cannot guarantee satisfying combat. The real test will be how smoothly the side-scrolling action works alongside character-specific challenges, particularly when two people are playing simultaneously.

Four platforms confirmed, but the release remains uncertain

The announcement arrived on November 3, 2026, accompanied by a reveal trailer and eight initial screenshots. The confirmed platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam.

However, there is an important distinction between the project’s announcement and its eventual launch. No release date has been provided. Its Steam listing currently says Coming soon, which does not establish a specific launch window.

A crowdfunding campaign is also planned, with a pre-launch page on BackerKit. That makes the next development milestone worth watching, especially for players interested in how the campaign may present its goals and rewards. Those details should not be assumed before they are officially confirmed.

The game can already be found through its Steam store page, where prospective PC players can follow its progress.

Ultimately, the Bill & Ted arcade game has a promising foundation: a comedy built around friendship, a ridiculous history assignment and an excuse to visit almost any century. Whether it becomes an excellent adventure will depend on how much fun those ideas are to play, rather than simply recognize.
