Baldur’s Gate 3 became a defining RPG of the last decade, setting new standards for player choice, narrative depth, and world-building. Now, that universe is officially making the jump to television, with an HBO series that will continue the story beyond the events of the game.
According to industry reports, the upcoming show will not retell Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, it will move the story forward, exploring the consequences of the chaos left behind after The Absolute’s defeat.
Craig Mazin Takes the Lead on Baldur’s Gate
The HBO adaptation will be created and showrun by Craig Mazin, best known for his work on HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us series. Mazin will also serve as writer and executive producer, ensuring strong creative oversight from start to finish.
He is joined by executive producers Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano. Chris Perkins, formerly Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, will act as a consultant to maintain consistency with Dungeons & Dragons lore.
A Direct Continuation, Not a Retelling
Unlike The Last of Us, which adapted an existing narrative, the Baldur’s Gate series will tell an entirely new story. The show begins after the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3, focusing on how its characters and the city itself deal with the aftermath of the crisis.
This approach allows longtime fans to experience fresh developments while keeping the door open for new viewers unfamiliar with the game.
Why Baldur’s Gate Is a Perfect Fit for Television
Baldur’s Gate exists within the Forgotten Realms, the flagship setting of Dungeons & Dragons. The franchise already boasts decades of lore, morally complex characters, and political intrigue—elements that translate naturally into serialized storytelling.
Mazin is also a dedicated D&D player, having served as a Dungeon Master for over a decade. His familiarity with both tabletop and video game storytelling makes him uniquely suited to handle the adaptation.
No Casting or Release Date Yet
At the time of writing, HBO has not announced casting details or a release window. However, Mazin has expressed interest in involving voice actors from Baldur’s Gate 3, following a similar approach used in The Last of Us.
With multiple Dungeons & Dragons projects in development across different platforms, HBO’s Baldur’s Gate series is shaping up to be a major pillar of the franchise’s future.
